A brave mouse from Narnia might be the last person you’d expect to challenge your faith, but Reepicheep does exactly that. I’m Danny Mack, and today on Starting Right I share how reading The Chronicles of Narnia as an adult opened my eyes to the Christian theology C.S. Lewis threads through the story, especially in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. When Reepicheep reaches the very edge of Aslan’s country and chooses to go on with Aslan, it becomes a powerful picture of courage, surrender, and what it means to long for heaven without fear.
That moment leads straight into Scripture and one of the clearest summaries of a well-lived life: 2 Timothy 4:7. Paul’s words, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful,” aren’t just for heroes in dramatic battles, they’re for people like us trying to live faithfully on regular days. We talk about how the good fight shows up at work, in marriage, in family life, and in the way we treat friends and strangers. We also ask hard questions worth sitting with: Do I stand up for what is right? Do I protect the dignity of others? Am I faithful to share God’s grace?
We end with a practical anchor for daily spiritual battles: the Word of God as our sword, our strength, and our wisdom when life gets heavy. Good morning and welcome to Starting Right. I am Danny Mack, and I'm going to be here every Monday to Friday to help you get a great start to your day. So grab your cup of coffee, sit back and relax for the next five minutes as I help you start your day by starting right.
Within the last few years, my wife has introduced me to an amazing series of books, The Chronicles of Narnia. Now I know that most people view these as children's stories, but I'd never read them as a child. I knew some of the basic elements of the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, but when it came to the remaining books in the anthology, I I really didn't know what they were about. But now I know the stories, and I know how C.S. Lewis has worked in so much Christian theology throughout the stories, I am amazed by what he has done, and I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoy reading them. The stories themselves stand alone as great stories,
but the real importance is that they are an allegorical lesson about the relationship between Christ and the earth and salvation and victory over Satan and all of the power of God and the way that God works. And it's a powerful, powerful story. There's just so much fun to read. There are a lot of great characters in these stories, but my personal favorite is a mouse. His name is Reepajep. He is brave, fearless, and a master with the sword. He does not back down from anyone or anything. He is a powerful ally to the children who have now arrived in Narnia, and he fights at their side against all of the evil they come in contact with. One of the individual books within the Chronicles of Narnia is The Voyage of the Don Treader. At the end of that story, Repa Jeep has traveled with the children so far east that they are right at the very edge of Aslan's country, which actually is the Narnian equivalent of heaven. And Aslan has met them there and is headed back to his country beyond the boundary of the giant wave. When Repajip calls out and goes after Aslan, asking Aslan if he can go with him. Aslan agrees. And Repa Jeep turns to say goodbye to the children. They've been through a tremendous amount together. Repajip tells them about how they have all fought the good fight and they have remained faithful to what Aslan had required of them. And now he's looking forward to his future with Aslan in Aslan's country.
The imagery that we see within the mouse is what we read about in Paul's life in 2 Timothy chapter 4 and verse 7. He says, I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. I really hope and pray that when we get to the end of our lives, we are able to say that we have fought that good fight, and that we have finished the race, and that we have remained faithful.
For most of us, our journey is not fantastic or wild or overly exciting. It's a series of events that we face every day, staying strong, staying wise, and learning how to overcome and be strong with the grace of God working in our lives. Making sure that we fight the good fight of faith is about how we go about our jobs. It's how we are faithful to our spouses and our families. It's how we treat our friends and how we treat strangers we come in contact with every day. Do we make sure that we stand up for what is right? Are we mindful of the dignity of others and treat them with the dignity that they deserve? Have we been faithful in telling others about God's grace that has been offered to them so openly and so freely? Within the Chronicles of Narnia, fighting the good fight is often seen as literally in a battle. But for us, fighting the good fight means that we have stayed faithful, that daily we have taken up the cross of Christ, and that we are prepared to sacrifice ourselves and our preferences for the wants and desires of those people around us. Our
journey has been very challenging over the last year and a half, but just like Repajib, we have a sword with which we can face the challenges that we are up against. The Bible tells us that the Word of God is our sword. It is our strength and wisdom for every battle that we face. And when we use the word of God correctly, it will always provide for us the victory that we need in our lives. We must continue to fight that good fight of faith, being an example to everyone about who Christ is and the power of his love and care for this world. Fight the good fight, my friends. Stay faithful. Finish your race. Have a great day, my friends. We'll talk again tomorrow. Thank you for listening today. And I invite you to join me Monday to Friday right here on Starting Right with Danny Mack.
