A woman plants churches with Paul, teaches a rising leader, and gets her name placed first in a way that would have raised eyebrows in the first century. That’s Priscilla and her story is a timely jolt for anyone who feels overlooked, underqualified, or unsure how their gifts can matter. We walk through her introduction in Acts 18, where she and Aquila meet Paul in Corinth and share life with him as tentmakers, showing how ministry often grows out of ordinary work and faithful relationships.
From there, the focus shifts to Ephesus, where Priscilla and Aquila open their home and help shape a church community. We talk about why that kind of hospitality is real leadership, and how Priscilla’s teaching impacts Apollos, equipping him with a clearer understanding of Jesus as Messiah and sending the message even farther. That mentoring moment becomes a picture of spiritual multiplication: you invest in one person, and they carry the truth into rooms you may never enter.

Good morning and welcome to Starting Right. I am Danny Mack, and I'm going to be here every Monday to Friday to help you get a great start to your day. So grab your cup of coffee, sit back and relax for the next five minutes as I help you start your day by starting right.
I really enjoy reading about the people in the Bible who sort of come out of nowhere and then are able to have an incredible impact. And today we're going to look at one of these individuals. What makes this person so unique is that this is a woman in the New Testament who led and planted churches along with Paul. Her proper name was Priscilla, but most of us know her as Priscilla. We are introduced to her in the first few verses of Acts chapter 18. It tells us that Paul left Athens and went to Corinth, and there he became acquainted with a Jew named Aquila, who had recently arrived from Italy with his wife Priscilla. And then it tells us that Paul lived and worked with them, for they were tent makers just as he was. Priscilla is mentioned throughout the books of Acts and Romans. She served the church alongside her husband, and she played a significant role in advancing the gospel during some of these very difficult early years of the church.
In Acts eighteen, Priscilla and Aquila travel with Paul to Syria, where they remained in Ephesus even after Paul had left and gone back to Jerusalem. It was here that Priscilla came into her own. They set up a church in their own home, and Priscilla began to teach anyone and everyone who had listened about the crucified prophet Jesus Christ. This is where she met and taught Apollos. She passed on to Apollos what she had learned from Paul, giving Apollos an understanding of the importance of Jesus' message and the fact that he was the Messiah and the new life that there was in Jesus Christ. And from here Apollos began to teach other Jews about the reality of who Jesus was, a message that Priscilla herself could not easily give to many of the Jews.
In Romans chapter sixteen, Paul lists what has been called the picture gallery of New Testament believers, since it lists so many members of the infant church. The greetings were somewhat varied, but one third of the names on this role were women, showing the prominent place that women held in the church at that time in Rome. Paul was a man who was not afraid to recognize the function of women in Christian service, and the women of that time they were ready. They were ready to respond to the call of Christ and to live their lives teaching and declaring who he was. Paul often wrote to Priscilla and Aquila, and often as he wrote them, he listed them in that order, with Priscilla's name coming first, which was highly unusual. But he recognized the importance of her work, of her ministry, for her love and care of the Word of God and the mission and ministry of Jesus Christ that she had learned about. She was a highly effective minister and teacher for Jesus Christ. Paul mentions her in several other places in Scripture, but his last mention of her comes in Second Timothy chapter four and verse nineteen, where he tells Timothy to give his greetings to Priscilla
and Aquila. Priscilla and Aquila meant a lot to Paul and to his ministry, and he honored and mentioned them often. As we look at Priscilla's story, we see a woman who was used by God to build the church. Sometimes we fail to recognize that actually happened in the New Testament, but it did. Paul honored her as a fellow worker in the gospel of Jesus Christ. He honored her for the work that she had done. She was used to teach Apollos. She was used to teach others who were then able to go out and declare this word and work of Christ. She was a very important part of the beginning of the New Testament church. If there's one thing we can take out of her story, it's that God really doesn't care if it's a man or a woman who has the truth of God within them. He wants us all to use that truth to impact other people for Jesus Christ. Priscilla had the ability to teach, she had the ability to encourage, she had the ability to start and to build a church and to teach other people and to send them out. She was a hard worker for the truth there was in Jesus Christ. If God has placed within you the ability to do something for him and for his kingdom, don't ever look at why you can't. Only look at why you can. When God places his call upon you and he gives you the gifts and the abilities that go beyond yourself, it is our responsibility to use those gifts, to use those abilities, no matter where we think we may fall short in and of ourselves. Because it's not about what we can do, it's about what God can do through us. And what God can do through us is truly amazing.
