Why Real Change Starts With The Spirit Within You

One little question can mess with your whole Monday in the best way: If you could change one thing about yourself with no limits, what would it be? I take that question head-on, because most of us already know what we want to fix, but we keep getting pulled back into the same loop. We start strong, we swear it will be different this time, and then life happens: temptation, stress, convenience, a “quick” exception that turns into the old normal. The result is frustration and that heavy feeling that maybe we just do not have the discipline.

I bring it back to a single verse that reframes everything, Romans 8:11: the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you. That is not motivational fluff. It is a claim about where real power for personal change actually comes from. If God’s Spirit is alive within us, then the problem is not a lack of desire. The real issue is often disconnection. Power does not help if we are not listening, responding, and letting ourselves be led in the places that matter most.

Your family who's not with you, maybe you got a chance to talk to them or Skype them or FaceTime them or zoom them, whatever you need to do. But I hope you got a chance to connect. Connect to the people that you love.

weight from binge watching Netflix or something. Maybe you've tried to change those things in the past and it just didn't work out the way you wanted it to. Sometimes we get started on something. We're so determined to make this change in our lives, and we we start our diet or we start our new spending regimen, and everything goes along well for maybe the first two, three weeks, and then all of a sudden there's a sale on cheeseburgers. Or your friend asks you out for pizza, or something happens and you totally blow it, and you're back to square one, and you go, Oh man, I blew it again. I just don't have the discipline I need to do what needs to be done. And so we beat ourselves

Romans 8:11 And Real Power

up. Let me read you this verse out of Romans chapter 8, verse 11. Paul is speaking to the church there in Rome, and he says, This the same spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is living in you. Now that thought just blows my mind. I am amazed every time I think about that concept. That the God who spoke the world and the universe into being, his spirit is alive in me. The same God that flung the stars into the skies from his fingertips, that breathed life into the created beings, all of that power of God resides within that spirit, which is within me and within you. And with all of that power of God within us, still we cannot make the changes that we know we need to make and that we want to make. It's so frustrating.

Connect, Listen, Then Act

But here's the thing in order for the power of that Spirit of God to be released into our lives, we've got to connect with it. Just like you needed to connect with your family this weekend, and when you spent time with them or you talked with them, it built up strength within you and within them. The Spirit of God resides within us, and if we're not communicating with it, if we're not listening to what it says to us and then doing what the Spirit of God wants us to do, we will get frustrated and we will not be able to accomplish what God wants in our lives. We need to listen to what He's saying directly to us, and then we need to do what we are told to do. We need to not be afraid to take a morally correct stand, even when it's unpopular. We need to not be afraid to say we disagree with the things that are popular, that are contrary to what God wants and what his word says is correct and right. We need to make those choices and to take those actions. When we start to do that, when we start to let ourselves be led by the Spirit of God in all of the areas of our life, and the things that we need to change can start to change because it's now not just our power working on it, it's the power of the Holy Spirit, the power of the Spirit of God living inside of you, that same spirit that created the world is inside of you.

A New Week With Help

As you start your week, remind yourself the Spirit of God is alive within you, and He is wanting to help you this week to be who you need to be and to do the things that you need to do in a way that will be honoring to God and bring peace and strength and fulfillment to you.
