He picked up a bag of dull clay balls and started tossing them into the ocean for fun. Then one slipped, cracked on a rock, and revealed a precious stone inside and suddenly the whole day looked different. That one moment becomes the mirror we all need: how often do we look at a person, make a snap judgment, and never take the time to discover the real value they carry?

We tell the full story, then turn it into a practical conversation about relationships, empathy, and the cost of living on the surface. When someone doesn’t look impressive, isn’t stylish, or doesn’t have status, it’s easy to “throw them away” emotionally by discounting them. But the regret in that beach story is a warning: we can lose a fortune of friendships, wisdom, and community simply because we never looked past the clay.

A Walk Along The Seashore

SPEAKER_00

Good morning everybody. I've got a story for you today that I think you'll find interesting. It's a story of a man who decided to spend his day walking along the seashore exploring caves. In one of the caves he found a canvas bag with a bunch of hardened clay balls inside of it. It was like someone had rolled out the clay balls and left them out in the sun to bake. They didn't look like much, but they intrigued him. So he picked up the bag with the balls and walked along the beach with them. As he strolled along, he would pull a ball out of the bag and take a look at it for a few seconds and roll it between his fingers and then throw it out into the ocean as far as he could.

The Clay Ball Breaks Open

SPEAKER_00

He really didn't think about it very much until he dropped one, and it cracked open on a rock. Inside was a beautiful precious stone, treasure in the clay. Excited the man started breaking open the remaining clay balls, and each one contained a similar treasure. He found thousands of dollars worth of jewels in the twenty or so balls he had left. Then it struck him. He had been on the beach for a long time. He had thrown maybe fifty or sixty of the balls with their hidden treasure into the ocean waves, and instead of thousands of dollars in treasure, he could have been taking home tens of thousands, but he had just thrown it away.

Treasure Hidden In People

SPEAKER_00

You know, it's kind of like that with people sometimes. We look at someone, maybe even ourselves, and we see this external clay vessel. It doesn't look like much from the outside. It isn't always beautiful or sparkling, so we discount it. And we often judge it. We see that person as less important than someone more beautiful or stylish or well known or wealthy. But we have not taken the time to find the treasure hidden inside that person. Second Corinthians chapter four, verse seven says, We have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all surpassing power is from God and not from us. There is power and beauty in each one of us that God has placed inside these vessels of clay which we call our bodies. And there is that treasure in each and every one of us. If we take the time to get to know that person, and if we ask God to show us how he sees that person and help us to see them the same way, then the clay begins to peel away. And we can begin to see that brilliant gem which shines beneath. I like this story because it reminds us not to judge anyone or anything by what we see on the outside. It's what is on the inside that really counts and really is of value. And God has placed inside of each one of his children a brand new life, a life that is full of light and power and strength and wisdom because Christ is within us. It doesn't matter what we look like on the outside. The truth is what we all look like on the inside. And that is what God has created in us and blessed us with, with His presence and His Spirit guiding us and helping us.

Choosing Empathy Over Judgment

SPEAKER_00

I hope that none of us come to the end of our lives and find out that we have thrown away a fortune of friendships because the gems were hidden in bits of clay. I pray that we see people in our world as God sees them, and we can respond and relate to them in the way that God wants us to, that we will seek to build each other up and reveal the hidden treasure that there is in each one of us. I hope and pray for all of us that we will be very careful about judging people by what we see on the outside, and that we will work hard to get to know the real person as they are on the inside and on what God has done and created in them. Have a great day, my friends. We will talk again tomorrow. Thank you for joining us today, and I invite you to join us every Monday to Friday, right here at Starting Right with Danny Mack.
