One word in a worship chorus can carry an entire theology, and it’s easy to sing it without ever stopping to ask what it means. Today’s Music Monday takes Elevation Worship’s song “Jehovah” and uses it as a quick, Scripture-based guide to the name of God that shows up across the Old Testament and in many English Bibles as “LORD.” If you’ve ever wondered where “Jehovah” comes from, how it relates to “Yahweh,” and why any of this matters for real life, this short devotional is for you.

We walk straight into Exodus 3:13–15, where Moses asks God what name to give the people, and God answers with the words that still steady anxious hearts: “I Am Who I Am.” We talk about how God’s “I Am” points to his power, his presence, and his reliability, not as an abstract idea, but as something you can lean on when your day feels heavy. This is Bible study that stays practical: when you know what God says about himself, you know how to rely on him.

A Five Minute Morning Start

SPEAKER_01

Good morning and welcome to Starting Right with Danny Mack. I'm going to be here every Monday to Friday to help you get a great five-minute start to your day. So grab your cup of coffee, sit back, relax, and let me help you start your day right. Good morning everybody. Welcome to Music Monday. Today we're going to take a look at a song from Elevation Worship called Jehovah. It reminds us of God's power, his love, and his greatness, and that he is worthy of all our praise. And I really like it. So before we take a look at it, let's just talk about its title, the word Jehovah. Most of you are aware that that's an Old Testament name for God, but that wasn't the original Old Testament name for God. That's sort of the English translation of what the Hebrew word was. The closest we can come to the Hebrew word is the word Yahweh. And in the Old Testament, whenever you see the word Jehovah, or even the word Lord, which is another English translation, in the original that word was the word Yahweh. And that name is in fact one that God declared about himself. If you read back in Exodus chapter three, verses thirteen to fifteen, God had just told Moses to go and free the people of Israel out of Egypt. And Moses asked God, Who should I tell the people has sent me if they ask? And in Exodus three verses thirteen to fifteen, we have God's response. God said to Moses, I am who I am. Say this to the people of Israel. I am has sent me to you. Say this to the people of Israel. The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob has sent me to you. This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations. God has declared Himself to be the I am. And in previous podcasts we talked a little bit about this, and we defined I am as being God declaring I am what you need me to be when you need me to be it. I am the all-powerful one, I am the all-knowing one, I am everywhere all the time, I am God. And God's name of Yahweh is so, so powerful. What's happened is the name Yahweh is one that the English language does not really work with, and it was translated many years ago into the word Jehovah, which we are more familiar with today. When today's song is talking about Jehovah, he's talking about the I am of God. But not only is there the name Jehovah, there are other names that are associated with Jehovah. In the song today they talk about Jehovah Nisi, Jehovah Jirah, Jehovah Rapha, Jehovah Shalom, and there are many others. Each one of these secondary names talks about a specific aspect of who God is and how he wants to work in our lives. God is all of these things. He is our healer, he is our banner, he is our supplier, he is all knowing. God is all of those things wrapped up in one. And when we worship the Lord or Jehovah or Yahweh, whatever name we use, we're worshiping the almighty and all powerful God who wants to work in us. Let me read you just a few of the lyrics from the song. He shames every idol, he reigns without rival. He goes by the name of Jehovah. He speaks into nothing and darkness goes running. He goes by the name Jehovah. His foes will be silenced, he's fighting for Zion. There is no other god like Jehovah. His arm never tires, his eyes are like fire. There is no other god like Jehovah. So this week we're going to do something a little bit different. Each day we're going to look at the name Jehovah in relationship to one of the secondary names that goes with it. We'll look at Jehovah Jirah and Jehovah Nisi and Jehovah Shalom, and we will look at some of the others as well. I hope you join me throughout this week as we look at some of the names that God has used to describe Himself in the Bible. And when we know more about what God says about himself, we know more about how we can rely on him and believe in him, and know that he's always there to work with us and for us. Elevation worship song today, Jehovah, is a powerful song that features some of the great names of God and reminds us that we can trust him, we can believe in him, and we can call on him and praise him, because he is the great and holy one, Yahweh, Jehovah, the Lord. Here's just a taste of Elevation Worship and Jehovah.
