Mary Did You Know

DannyMac Season 1 Episode 2023

What if the most courageous thing you do today is say yes without seeing the whole path? We dive into the heart of Mary Did You Know and discover how a young woman’s trust became a blueprint for living with faith in uncertain times. Along the way, we trace the song’s journey from Mark Lowry’s lyrics to Buddy Green’s melody and explore why this modern carol still stirs our hearts.  We walk through what scripture says Mary actually knew: the Son of God, the promised Messiah, the one who would save. Then we sit with what she didn’t know: the timing, the trials, the day-to-day details. Her response—“I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me as you have said."
That same pattern can shape our lives. When we step forward without certainty, we make space for grace to surprise us: a reconciled relationship, a need met at the right time, a door opened we never saw coming. It’s a reminder that faith and worship can renew courage, especially when details are thin and decisions feel heavy.

Mary did you know, that your baby boy would save us the sons and daughters. Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you know this child that you delivered will soon deliver you.

SPEAKER_02:

Mary Did You Know, written by Mark Lowry back in nineteen eighty four, has become one of our modern Christmas classics. Over the last few weeks we've spent a little bit of time talking about some of the great Christmas carols. A lot of them were written in the eighteen hundreds and some as early as the seventeen hundreds. They've been around for a long time. But Mary Did You Know, which came along within the last thirty years, has become one of those great modern songs of the Christmas season. As I said, Mark Lowry wrote this in nineteen eighty four, but it wasn't until nineteen ninety one that it actually got music when he ran into a friend of his, Buddy Green, who put the music together and then they recorded it and has become incredibly popular ever since. It's a powerful and beautiful song that asked the question, Mary, were you aware of all the things that Jesus was going to become and do? Now obviously, if you read the scripture, you know that the Bible tells us that Mary was aware of some of the things that she knew that he was the Son of God. She knew she was pregnant by the Holy Spirit. She knew that Jesus was the Messiah, the one that was coming to save the world. She knew that he was going to be called the wonderful counselor, the mighty God, the Prince of Peace, the everlasting Father. She knew all of those things. Now, much to Mary's credit, she didn't strain at the details. She didn't challenge the angel on all of the questions and all of the problems. In fact, she didn't even bring up her fiance to the angel to say, Well, this is going to be a problem with him, or this is going to be a problem with my family. How are we going to work all these things out? Mary just did a very powerful and important thing. When God spoke to her through the angel and told her that she was chosen to bear the Son of God, after a very short discussion, she said in Luke 1 28, I am the Lord's servant. May it be to me as you have said. Now there's a woman of faith. And there's a woman who didn't worry about the details. God has this way of working in our lives where He will come and He will show us steps that we must take, but He never shows us the whole path that He wants us to go down. We don't get a lot of the details in our lives all the time. And so when Mary started to see Jesus growing up and she saw and heard about the miracles that Jesus performed, she may not have known exactly what he was going to do, but I think at each step along the way, it filled her with awe and excitement to know that God was working through her son, that God was using her son, that God was her son. I believe the song is as much about that as it is above was she aware of the details. The details didn't matter. The details weren't the essential part of it. What Mary was concerned about was God wanted to use her, and she was willing to do it to bring about the Messiah who would save the world. That was Jesus' ultimate goal to save the world. So Mary didn't worry about the rest. But you know, I believe every time that Jesus did something, something miraculous, healed people, fed the five thousand, walked on water, raised the dead, healed the leper, gave sight to the blind. Every time Jesus did one of those things and the report got back to her, I believe there was this sense of awe and excitement that filled her. That's my son doing what he was supposed to do. God chose me to be able to allow this to happen, and she was filled with the excitement of it all. Many times our faith does not require us to know all the details. But many times our faith does require us to do what we know we need to do. And then as we go along, God's going to do some other things along the way. And when he does, when we can get excited and we can praise God, and we can just be filled with the wonder of who God is and his power, that God would use us, that God would use me to do what he asked me to do. And the result of my obedience was this powerful blessing in somebody else's life. Their lives are impacted and changed because I believed what God asked me to do, and I trusted him with it. So did Mary know all of those things she was asked in the song? Well, Mary knew the important things, but she didn't know the details, and that's perfectly okay with God. She remains as an example of what faith is for you and for me. We don't need to know the details. We just need to be obedient. Trust Jesus with your future, with a future for your family and for your home. And let him work out the details. You hang on to the things that you do know and let him work out the things that you don't know. One of my favorite versions of this song is performed by Pentatonics, who you heard at the beginning of this podcast. And in your show notes today, you will find the YouTube link to their performance of this song. Check it out. You will enjoy it. Have a great day, my friends. We will talk again tomorrow. Thank you for listening today. And I invite you to join me Monday to Friday right here on Starting Right with Danny Mack.
