Noel, Six Days To Christmas

DannyMac Season 1 Episode 2021

Six days out from Christmas, we slow the rush and lean into one line that changes everything: “Come and see what God has done.” We share the quiet backstory of the modern carol “Noel,” written by Chris Tomlin, Ed Cash, and Matt Redman, and reflect on why Lauren Daigle’s unforgettable vocal lands with such power. The melody feels ancient for a reason, and the message—good news—offers more than seasonal cheer. It reframes how we think about hope, loss, and the courage to begin again.
You’ll hear encouragement to celebrate family, practice gratitude, and notice the small signs of grace that cut through the noise. We close with a short clip of “Noel” and a link in the show notes so you can take in the full performance. If this reflection steadied your week or stirred fresh hope, share it with a friend, subscribe for weekday five-minute starts, and leave a quick review to help others find the good news they need today.

SPEAKER_00:

Good morning and welcome to Starting Right with Danny Mack. I'm going to be here every Monday to Friday to help you get a great five-minute start to your day. So grab your cup of coffee, sit back, relax, and let me help you start your day right. Good morning everybody and welcome to this very last week before Christmas. It's amazing, isn't it? The year has just flown by. And here we are right now, just six days before Christmas. I hope that you're getting ready for it. You're going to be able to spend some time with your family and friends and celebrate together, because it really truly is a wonderful time of the year. Today we're going to take a look at another Christmas carol. This one is not as well known as some of the others we've talked about. It was written in 2015 by Chris Tomlin, Ed Cash, and Matt Redman. It's the Christmas carol called Noel. Most of you will probably know it as being sung by Lauren Daigle. In fact, Tomlin said they had Lauren Daigle in mind when they wrote the song. He said it's probably the first song that I've ever written where it just happened, but I just envisioned Lauren singing it all along, and I'm so thankful that she agreed to do it. Her vocal on the song is truly stunning. He also talks about the melody, saying that there's something ancient about the melodies in the song that give it a timeless feel. There's a lyric in the chorus that says Come and see what God has done. Those words sum up the entire project. It's my favorite line because that's essentially what I hope that people take away from it. And for me I love the melody, I love Lauren Daigle singing it, but the words are what impact me the most, particularly that line that Tomlin talked about, come and see what God has done. The word Noel, which is the title of this song, is very much associated with Christmas. In fact, many people believe it means Merry Christmas. But actually it's a French word, meaning good news. It's what the angels proclaimed to the shepherds in the field that night Jesus was born. The good tidings of great joy. The word gospel used throughout the New Testament, it also means good news. And that's why those words in the song, come see what the Lord has done, are so powerful. Because the entire New Testament tells the story of God leaving heaven and coming to earth in the form of Jesus Christ, so that we could have life and life in abundance. That's the good news of Jesus Christ, and that's the good news of Christmas. We're coming up to the end of our year, and at New Year's we often put together a set of New Year's resolutions, things we want to accomplish in the year to come, and things we want to not do in the New Year that maybe we've done in the past year. But right before New Year's comes Christmas, which I think is so appropriate, because it's our reminder that God has given us the good news to be able to put behind us all the negative things of the past. In John chapter 16 and verse 33, Jesus said this to us Here on this earth you will have many trials and sorrows, but take heart, because I have overcome the world. Some of the greatest gifts that Christ has given us is the ability to find healing, to find peace, to be comforted in the middle of sorrow, to know that there is always hope, and that we can trust Him in all things is the gospel of God, the good news of God, that Christ came that we might have life, the ability to live life to its fullest here, and to be able to have life for eternity in the presence of God. That's the good news. That's the Noel of Christmas time. As we wrap up the year and we look back and remember the things that have hurt us, that are continuing to hurt us, those times of loss, those times when we were blindsided, we didn't see it coming, and it's just crushed us. Those times of fear and pain, the times of a bad doctor report, the loss of someone so dear to us. The good news of Jesus is that in him there is always comfort, he's always there to help us. There is always hope. Even when we can't understand how or when or why he will do those things, he's promised us that he would simply because he loves us. The message of God at Christmas time is that God loves you and that he's with you and that he's for you. And that's what the good news or the Noel of Christmas is. God with us. I'm gonna leave you with a short clip of Noel being sung by Lauren Daigle. In your show notes today, there will be the YouTube link where you can click on that and go and watch the entire video. I know that you will enjoy it. And I hope you have a wonderful last week before Christmas, everyone. Get your shopping done, get the baking done, but more importantly, celebrate. Celebrate your family. Celebrate the love that you have with and for your family, and be thankful to God for his love for you and for everyone that you love. This is a time of love and joy and peace and celebration. So I encourage you to embrace that. Here's Lauren Daigle with Noelle.
