Headlines So Bad They’re Good, Medicine For The Soul

DannyMac Season 1 Episode 2009

Five minutes can flip your morning from heavy to light, and today we prove it with a pocketful of hilariously bad newspaper headlines and a fresh take on joy as daily medicine. We start with a simple idea from Proverbs—“a cheerful heart is good medicine”—then bring it to life with wordplay that makes you snort-laugh and a reflection on why humor is a strength, not a distraction. Along the way, we look at how laughing at ourselves builds humility, lowers stress, and opens space for kindness.
You’ll leave with small, doable ways to choose joy: laugh with your kids, send a kind text, collect three go-to lines that break tension, and make a five-minute ritual that resets your mind before the day gets loud. By the time your head hits the pillow, our hope is that you’ll look back and say, that was a really good day—not because it was perfect, but because you chose laughter on purpose and shared it. If this gave you a smile, hit follow, share it with a friend who needs a lift, and leave a quick review to help others find a brighter start.

SPEAKER_00:

Good morning and welcome to Starting Right with Danny Mack. I'm going to be here every Monday to Friday to help you get a great five-minute start to your day. So grab your cup of coffee, sit back, relax, and let me help you start your day right. The Bible tells us that a cheerful heart is good medicine. We find that in Proverbs chapter 17, verse 22. Today I want to help you find some cheerfulness in your heart, no matter where you're at, no matter what you're going through. We need to have some things to laugh at every once in a while to lift us up, to encourage us, and just have some fun. There are too many things that are trying to take all of that away from us. I have come across recently a bunch of crazy headlines from newspapers. You know how sometimes newspapers like to try to make their headlines catchy and kind of, you know, kind of slick with maybe a double meaning sometimes? Well, I've got a few of those that are just hilarious. And I just want to share some of those with you just to maybe brighten up the start of your day a little bit. So listen up as we go through some of these weird headlines. I'm not sure about the police force with this one, but the headline read, Police begin campaign to run down jaywalkers. How about this one from a poor guy who got struck by lightning? The headline read, Man struck by lightning faces battery charge. How about this lady? Woman improving after fatal crash. This one really took some work. Study reveals those without insurance die more often. How about this thief down in Miami? Miami man steals clock, faces time. I love this one about a typhoon. Typhoon rips through cemetery, hundreds dead. How about this headline and opening paragraph from Australia? Army vehicle disappears. An Australian army vehicle worth$74,000 has gone missing after being painted with camouflage. I love the logic behind this next one. Homicide victims rarely talk to police. And for this next one, which is about a decision that was made, I'm sure they had to form a committee, have several studies done before they could ever come up with this answer. The headline reads, State prisons to replace easy open locks. I really like this one about an eight-year-old boy. It's the headline and then the sub-headline just below it. Waterford boy eight saves sister's life. I wouldn't do it again, he said. She's been a real pain this week. Here's a county somewhere that's got a problem. The headline read County to pay$250,000 to advertise lack of funds. How about this one? Federal agents raid a gun shop and find weapons. We'll finish with this one from the classified ads. Nice parachute for sale. Never opened, used once, slightly stained. A sense of humor is essential for our lives. We have to be able to enjoy life. And we have to learn to laugh at ourselves sometimes when we make mistakes. It's a sign of real strength within us when we can do that, and we can feel comfortable with our own bloopers. Everybody makes them, everybody does them. Someone asked Billy Graham one time, did Jesus have a sense of humor? Billy Graham responded this way, he said, I'm sure he did. Think of his comment he made that it's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a prideful rich person to enter into heaven. Can you picture a camel trying to go through the eye of the needle without laughing? I doubt it. He goes on to say, The Bible also says the angels in heaven rejoice when someone repents and gives their life to Christ. Heaven is a place of joy and not sorrow. So do I think God has a sense of humor? Absolutely. I believe that God laughs, I believe that God gets excited, I believe God experiences joy and presents joy to everybody around him in heaven. And he has that for us here on this earth too. He loves us enough to want to give us that where we are right here because that's who he is. So today I hope I was at least able to bring a smile to your face. And I hope that today is filled with joy and that you have the ability to bring joy to someone else today. If you have an opportunity to play with your kids and laugh with them and enjoy time with them, do it. Make the effort to spend some time to enjoy the people around you. Feel free to laugh and enjoy the good things of life and experience all of the good that God has around you. Make the choice today to enjoy your day, to fill it with laughter and joy wherever you go. And when you go to bed tonight, you'll think back on your day and say, hey, that was a really good day. Have a really good day, my friends. We'll talk to you tomorrow. Thank you for listening today. And I invite you to join me Monday to Friday right here on Starting Right with Danny Mack.
